I was intrigued by a description of the movie “Medicine for Melancholy” in Austin. The teaser essentially boiled down to this: SF-based love story tackles gentrification issues, interracial dating, and urban displacement. The cinematography color was unlike anything I’ve seen in a while, and the music was well-selected despite feeling a bit jumpy (Au Revoir Simone, whose live show was discussed on this blog earlier, had a lovely ditty included). After the screening writer/director Barry Jenkins said that Chicago was his initial choice for the setting of the film but that he realized that San Francisco was the best location with its rent control controversy and comparatively small physical size. The issue will be addressed at the local Progressive Reading Series’ event to address rent costs in California this Saturday. Amy Tan will be on hand, and we know how much I love her.

I’m a big fan of SF photographer Jen Siska’s imaginative work and was excited to see that she’ll be exhibiting at an opening for a new Mission store this Saturday.
